Professor Jeremy WATSON

Jeremy Watson is Arup’s Global Research Director, responsible for Arup’s Research Strategy and the Research Consulting Business. Arup are a global design and business consulting engineering firm. Arup’s motto “We shape a better world” underlies its strive for technical excellence and innovation, and belief that sustainability underlies all good design. Jeremy has held research and technical management roles in industry and academe including service with the DTI and EPSRC. His specialities include Strategic Technology Development and Transfer, Innovation Processes and NPD Management. Jeremy also has technical expertise in Industrial Instrumentation and Control, Power Electronics, Signal Processing and Biomedical Engineering. Current research interests include Renewable Energy, Control for Energy Efficiency and Ambient Assistive Technologies. Jeremy is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the IET (Chairman: IET Control & Instrumentation Sector Panel), and has recently been appointed as a Board Member of the UK Government Technology and Strategy Board. Jeremy is a Senior Member of IEEE and Visiting Professor at the Universities of Southampton and Sussex.

A view of the role of CHAMSPAM in the context of the overall EPSRC Dongtan Eco-city Research Networks will be offered from an Arup point of view. The relevance of these Networks in relation to concepts and vision for International Institutes for Sustainability will be explored, with Arup’s work to develop agendas and plans for IfS in countries around the world outlined. A view will be given of possible EU and UK funding opportunities. Learning gained during a recent UK-RC-funded visit to China concerning the behaviour and needs of researchers and funding agencies in China will also be presented with a view to better facilitating the success of bids submitted by Chinese colleagues to their local funding agencies.
